The Mississippi Agricultural Industry Council will tackle pressing agricultural issues when they convene July 30 through Aug. 2 for their annual summer meeting at Perdido Beach Resort at Orange Beach, Al. The four-day event begins July 30 with a day-long educational session on varying aspects of row-crop agriculture, which will allow participants to obtain up to five hours of continuing education units. Keynote speakers begin at 1 p.m. July 31 and 8 a.m. on Aug. 1. Among the invited speakers are Scott Baucum with Monsanto, speaking on intellectual property and the issue of enforcing patent rights in the field; Steve Demarais with Mississippi State University will address issues and concerns of Mississippi's wildlife populations; and MSU agronomist Wayne Wells will discuss challenges and opportunities of the state's turf grass industry. In addition, state agriculture
leaders Dr. Charles Lee, president of MSU; Dr. Lester Spell, Commissioner
of the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce; Steve Holland,
chairman of the Mississippi House of Representatives Agriculture Committee;
and Mike McCart, MAIC represents all segments of the state's agricultural industry and provides opportunities for the industry in education, problem solving and communication to ensure the viability of agriculture at every level.
