ARS Celebrates 50 Years Of Conservation Service

JANUARY, 2004

According to Agricultural Research Service, farming and the environment do not have to be at odds. As it celebrates its 50th anniversary, ARS looks back on some of its advances.

The Universal Soil Loss Equation has prevented billions of tons of topsoil from eroding, officials from the USDA entity say. ARS also invented several irrigation devices, including surge valves and automated controls for water-conscious farmers. Further, because ARS is a federal agency with its own laboratories and staff, it can conduct long-term, large-scale research to help farmers be more economical while simultaneously preserving natural resources.
