Delta & Pine Land Acquires Technology Licenses From DuPont

Delta and Pine Land Company announced that it has acquired several licenses from DuPont subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., including its Optimum GAT herbicide tolerance technology for cotton and soybeans. Additionally, the company has acquired licenses for other products developed by the DuPont biotechnology research program and certain enabling technologies for use in cotton, soybeans and other crops.

The Optimum GAT trait developed by DuPont will provide farmers with expanded weed control options and help optimize yield. This herbicide tolerance technology makes plants tolerant to both glyphosate and ALS herbicides, including sulfonylureas.

Previously, DuPont announced plans to commercialize Optimum GAT in Pioneer brand corn and soybeans and also secured significant global outlicense agreements.

D&PL and DuPont are partners in a joint venture, DeltaMax Cotton LLC, which was initially formed to develop and commercialize glyphosate tolerance technology in cotton. The company also announced that it has reached an agreement to license soybean lines suitable for planting in the southern soybean market through the involvement of GreenLeaf Genetics LLC.

D&PL will pay DuPont $20.5 million in connection with this transaction and expects to account for it in the fourth quarter of the year.

MANA’s Generic Insecticide Receives Full EPA Registration

MANA (Makhteshim Agan of North America, Inc.) has received full EPA approval for Imidacloprid 4F insecticide, a new generic alternative for use in cotton. Imidacloprid 4F contains the same active ingredient found in Trimax for proven control of piercing and sucking insects that attack cotton plants, including aphids, plant bugs, fleahoppers and stinkbugs.

The active imidacloprid has also been shown to improve boll retention and encourage earlier harvest in cotton.

Immediately available, Imidacloprid 4F is formulated as a four-pound flowable, the formulation producers have depended on over the past few years.

In addition to Imidacloprid 4F, MANA offers cotton producers other generic products, including ABBA 0.15EC insecticide/miticide; Acephate 90 WSB, Fanfare and Silencer insecticides; mepiquat chloride PGR, Setup boll opener and Redi-Pik PGR/defoliant.

Valor’s Special Registration May Offer More Flexibility

Valent U.S.A. Corporation has announced a Valor herbicide 2(ee) registration from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) within the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma. The 2(ee) reduces the bark restrictions for cotton farmers in these states and allows more application flexibility when they use Valor against the toughest weeds at layby.

With the new 2(ee), Valor can be applied when bark is two inches tall and the cotton is 16 inches tall. Previously, Valor’s label indicated that applications be made when the cotton had four-inch bark and was 18 inches tall.

A similar 2(ee) has been in place for two years in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. According to John Pawlak, Valent product development manager, the more lenient restrictions have proven successful for farmers in those states and will be important to farmers fighting tough and increasingly resistant weeds.

Valor provides residual control of annual broadleaf weeds and grasses in front of soybeans, cotton and peanuts, cotton layby, as well as early preplant burndown in front of wheat, sorghum, corn and rice.

Case IH, Ferrari Team Up For Grand Prix Races

Agricultural equipment industry leader Case IH and Ferrari made history as they paired up for the first time at two Formula 1 racing events in North America. Ferrari team cars featured prominent Case IH decals during the Grand Prix of Canada in Montreal, June 25; and the U.S. Grand Prix in Indianapolis, July 2.

Mario Ferla, president, Case IH, called it “a great opportunity” for Case IH to share the global stage with world-renowned Ferrari. Both are identified by their powerful products and signature red color, as well as for setting the standard of excellence in their respective industries.

“We are elated that Fiat, Ferrari’s majority owner, has allowed its (Fiat’s) logo to be replaced on the Prancing Horse’s Formula 1 cars,” says Ferla. “This sends a strong message about the importance of Case IH, also a member of The Fiat Group.”

The Ferrari team is led by Michael Schumacher, the seven-time world drivers’ champion, and Felipe Massa.

New Web Brochure Assists Equipment Sales

The North American Equipment Dealers Association (NAEDA) has produced a new, Web-accessible brochure that explains the process for buyers and sellers to identify outstanding equipment liens.

NAEDA’s four-page Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) Brochure, freely available via Internet at www.naeda.com, explains why buyers and sellers need to know about UCC law and how to check for UCC-1 filings.

It also defines liens specific to an individual piece of equipment and blanket liens. Buyers, sellers and secured parties must agree on how liens are handled before a legal transaction protecting all parties can take place.
