It feels like we just started the new year and gathered in San Antonio at the Beltwide Cotton Conference, but the calendar on my wall says we are almost halfway through March. There are planters rolling in South Arkansas putting corn in the ground, and plant 2K26 will be in full swing before we know it.
The prompt for this entry was “fine tuning before planting” and by the time this article is released, we will be right on the precipice of getting this cotton crop rolling in the natural state. As I have been visiting with producers this winter, there has been lots of talk about reduced seeding rates as a way to lower input costs and maximize returns. We have several years of data suggesting that reducing seeding rates is a viable option to save some money on the front end.
Our research has exhibited comparable yields with reduced seeding rates, and in speaking with some of the other specialists in this section who have observed the same, I feel very comfortable in saying that our seeding rates are a topic worth revisiting before planting begins. Don’t be afraid to lower that seeding rate a little; cotton will compensate. I am more than happy to visit with you or share the data we have accumulated. Please do not hesitate to reach out on this matter or anything else: [email protected]. ∆
