See Cotton Research in Action: Sign Up for a 2027 Producer Tour
Malorie Paine, Communications Manager
The Cotton Board’s Producer Tours connect producers with the research, innovation and manufacturing that support the U.S. cotton industry.
Providing a firsthand look at how research and innovation help strengthen cotton’s position in the marketplace, the two-day experience includes a visit to Cotton Incorporated’s World Headquarters and Research Facility in Cary, North Carolina.
Inside Cotton Incorporated’s Research Facility
The first day focuses on the research and development taking place at Cotton Incorporated. Participants hear from staff members about their specialized areas of work and visit laboratories where researchers explore new technologies, improve textile processes and develop innovative cotton products.
The tour includes several key research areas:
-
Fiber Processing Laboratory: A full-scale, state-of-the-art yarn-processing pilot facility.
-
Dyeing and Finishing Laboratory: Researchers use advanced dyeing equipment to study color washdown, process optimization and product evaluation.
-
Finishing Research/Analytical Laboratory: Research focuses on new finishes and innovative methods for applying them to textiles.
-
Product Evaluation Laboratories: Ongoing studies evaluate cotton and its performance.
-
Product Development Laboratory: Researchers develop new fabric concepts for apparel and home products, including knit garments showcased to brands and retailers worldwide.
These facilities demonstrate how research supports cotton’s performance, expands its applications and helps maintain its competitiveness against other fibers.
From Fiber to Finished Product
The second day features a visit to a textile mill, where participants observe the manufacturing process and see how cotton is transformed into finished products, including T-shirts.
The visit connects cotton production on the farm with the processes and technologies required to bring cotton products to market. It also provides insight into the manufacturing side of the value chain and the role textile innovation plays in supporting demand for U.S. cotton.
