As June arrives, cotton growers are typically crossing key milestones. Planting is largely complete, the thrips window has closed in our region, and many early season pest management decisions are already in the rearview mirror. While some later-planted or June cotton may still face challenges related to disease, nematodes, or weed control, most fields have moved beyond those initial decision points.

That said, the season is far from over. June marks the time when attention shifts to mid-season management. Earlier-planted cotton may be approaching the window for plant growth regulator applications, sidedress nitrogen decisions come into focus, and the first plant bugs may begin appearing as fields reach squaring. Each of these factors can influence yield potential, making informed decisions more important than ever.

As one colleague often reminds growers, one of the smartest investments you can make is either hiring a knowledgeable scout or learning to scout your own crops effectively. With ongoing concerns about future insect pressure, accurate field intelligence remains the foundation of sound management decisions — you have to know what’s in the field before you can respond appropriately.

To support these efforts, Dr. Phillip Roberts and Dr. Mark Abney will host two scout schools this year. The first takes place June 1 in Tifton, followed by a second on June 9 in Midville. These hands-on programs provide valuable training on scouting cotton, peanuts, and soybeans, and are excellent opportunities to sharpen skills heading into the heart of the season.

As always, if you ever need anything please don’t hesitate to reach out! Your local University of Georgia county Extension Agents and the cotton team are here to help!
