The 2026 cotton planting season saw a variety of weather patterns and rainfall. In the early and middle part of April, temperature conditions were ideal for cotton, yet there was very little moisture available.

Getting later into April into early May, rainfall became more widespread, but temperature conditions were less than ideal. Cotton planted during this period saw much slower emergence and development. These fields took up to two weeks to emerge out of the soil and put on cotyledons. I got a few phone calls and pictures asking, “Why is cotton developing at such a slow rate?” Cool temperatures and overcast conditions created an environment not favorable for rapid cotton growth.

As we fast forward to June, most of the cotton acreage in Alabama had been planted. Most of the June-planted cotton is located in South and Central Alabama. Overall, across the state, there will be more later-planted cotton due to waiting for optimal planting conditions. The best recipe for this cotton moving forward is ample sunshine and timely rain, so hopefully it is in the extended weather forecast!

According to the latest U.S. Department of Agriculture Crop Progress report, Alabama was 91% planted as of June 9 2026. If you have questions about early season cotton development and management, Alabama Cooperative Extension is here to help! Please don’t hesitate to contact your local Extension agent or specialist for more information.  ∆
