It’s hard to believe it as it’s 101 degrees in Northeast Arkansas as I write this, but we are moving toward the short rows of this cotton crop. We’ve had a pretty hot and dry summer in Arkansas with intermittent rain that has been spotty at best. The weather has progressed this crop well, and I am hopeful the weather cooperates for a timely and efficient harvest.
An efficient harvest season could be crucial as Arkansas stared down the barrel of what is being called a historic El Niño that should bring above-average rain in late fall. A good bit of Arkansas’s cotton crop was planted early, and for the crop that didn’t need replanting, that could be quite a blessing as that crop could be out of the field before the rains set in.
Also worth mentioning is picker maintenance. Though it’s early August, it’s time to begin thinking about harvest equipment, so downtime can be minimized when it matters. As always, please reach out with any questions at [email protected].
