The start of a new cotton growing season is always an exciting time of year, but it’s also one of the busiest. Trying to make sure you have everything you need to plant cotton is no small task. If you are anything like me, making a list is a helpful tool to ensure that I have everything ready to put cotton seed into the soil. So, what does a pre-season checklist for cotton look like? Well, like any agronomist would say – “It depends.”

The highlights of my list would start off by thinking back to my fertilizer recommendations. Did I take a soil test to know what nutrients the fields need? Did I already apply the correct pre-plant nutrients needed to set my crop up for success? Next, I would think about whether I have my other inputs ready to go when conditions are right, such as seed, herbicides, insecticides, and nematicides (if needed).

While these are critical to the cotton-planting checklist, there is one task on the list that can be easily forgotten: checking your planter and equipment. This critical task will save you time and headache later in the season. After you dust off the planter from last season, take a moment to ensure that everything is functioning correctly. First, check to see if any parts need to be replaced or repaired. Second, check wiring and hoses for tears or holes and ensure everything is connected.

Once the planter has been checked for functionality, now comes calibration time. Calibration is a crucial step in ensuring planter accuracy and efficiency. With cotton seed being one of the highest input costs, take the time to ensure you are putting the appropriate amount of cotton seeds where you want them. Calibration also includes checking seeding depth and the amount of downforce on your planter.

These factors all play a role in getting a good cotton stand. Let’s be proactive and take some preventative measures to reduce the possibility of replant situation due to equipment. If you have questions on cotton planting or planter calibration, Alabama Cooperative Extension is here to help! Please don’t hesitate to contact your local Extension agent or specialist for more information.   ∆
