As we get ready to start the 2026 cotton growing season, one of the questions is always “What variety are you planting this year?” Cotton variety selection is one of the first management decisions a grower makes each season. I’ve been asked the question “What is your favorite variety?” and I usually answer along the lines of “There are many good ones out there.” Now this is not the answer everyone is looking for, so let me explain what I mean by this statement. To me, the best variety is a well-adapted cotton variety that yields well based on a grower’s specific inputs, management practices, and environment.
When selecting a variety, think about the environment and ground you are about to plant. For example, is this a late planting date? Am I going to plant in potentially cool conditions? Is there a history of high nematode pressure in the field? Do I want thrips control from my cotton seed? These are questions I consider when selecting cotton seed for research and on-farm trials. Luckly, there are several tools to help in making informed decisions. First is utilizing Auburn’s Variety Selection Tool for selecting a cotton variety at https://aaes.auburn.edu/blog/2025/10/10/performance-of-cotton-varieties-in-alabama-2025/. Here, growers can explore a wide range of varieties, environments, and planting dates across Alabama. Another great resource are results from the AU On-Farm Variety Trials at https://auburn.medius.re/document/r1nRBAY94P. Both resources have information on lint yield and fiber quality. Also, be sure to discuss variety selection with your local seed company representative.
One final thing to keep in mind is that while variety selection can influence crop performance, there are numerous other factors that go into making a high-yielding cotton crop. A successful cotton crop starts at the beginning. To ensure the cotton variety you have chosen yields to its potential, remember to check the weather forecast for ideal growing conditions and adequate soil moisture before you start planting. Lastly, check your planter and equipment before you get into the planting groove! Alabama Cooperative Extension is here to help! If you have questions about variety selection or planting, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your local Extension agent or specialist. ∆
