
Growing up, Cates loved the outdoors. While in high school, his FFA teacher, Sam Mullins, not only educated him about agriculture but also encouraged him to scout cotton during the summer.
“At that time, farmers were looking for young men who were willing to work hard and in a timely manner,” Cates says. “They needed someone they could rely on to be on their farms every week on a scheduled day. I was interested in entomology so scouting for insects was a good fit for me.”
